    BOROUGH DAY POINT FORTIN 2000
21st Anniversary Weekend

Saturday
5th May 2001
04:00 pm

MUSIC FESTIVAL
Pan on ‘D’ Move
Conventional Steelbands
Passing around the Town of Point Fortin, Trinidad.

Steelbands to play at least:
2001 Calypso, a 10 Year Old - 1991 Calypso and a Non-Calypso in calypso tempo.

There is a New Format to this years Borough Day steelband music festival.
There is No competition this year, but the bands have been asked to play continuously, while on the move, selections as indicated and any other selections from their repertoires. So from those bands that maintain a stage side, it is likely that a lot more music will be in the offing.

Bands will simultaneously start from two points within the Town - Library Corner and Frisco Junction - at 4:00 pm.
The Library Corner Group move around the triangle; clockwise passing Tornadoes panyard at the back, round to Frisco Junction, and along the high street back to Library corner, turning left to pass Market Square, and finish further down the road at the church.
The Frisco Junction Group move along the high street to Library corner, turning left to pass Market Square, do a double right to pass behind the Market, return to Library corner like the other group, and finish at the left turn-off, just before the Tornadoes panyard.

Point Fortin Borough Day 2001 Steelband Routes

A last minute change in line-up finds that WITCO Desperadoes take the place of Phase II Pan Grove for this years Borough Day Pan Festival. The reason for Phase II's withdrawal is unknown at this time, and their absence will dissappoint some supporters in Point Fortin. Despers appearance will do much as compensation for the steelbands fans however. Their late decision to enter meant that they missed the draw held last Saturday, 28th April at the Town Hall, and now appear as the last band within the Library Corner Draw group; making up a position now made vacant by Phase II.

Library Corner Draw:
  1. BP Renegades
  2. Carib Tokyo
  3. Caribbean Steel Mills Arima Angel Harps
  4. Trinmar Hatters
  5. ( Variously sponsored ) Exodus
  6. Trinidad Cement Ltd Group Skiffle Bunch
  7. Southern Marines Steelband Foundation
  8. WITCO Desperadoes
Frisco Junction Draw:
  1. Harmonites
  2. Starland
  3. Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars
  4. Tropical Angel Harps
  5. Petrotrin Siparia Deltones
  6. Melodians
  7. Tornadoes

CULTURAL
FESTIVAL

Celebration of Cultural Flavors
Culture with Pan
Rio Claro, Trinidad.

In conjunction with the Rio Claro and Mayaro Borough Councils and in association with Pan Trinbago; street parades in the afternoon featuring East Indian and African themes of dress and drumming.

Starting at 06:00 pm and for broadcast on FM100, principal steelband organisers Rio Claro Koskeros feature in their panyard the invited bands.

In the Event:
Single pan steelbands Arima All Stars, and Trinmar Marines started the yard show each playing about four vibrant numbers.
Petrotrin Siparia Deltones then followed with, among other things, a driving display of solo brakes from about 5 of their lead players.
PCS Nitrogen Starlift then settled in with some wonderful favourites and prodused an unbeatable bass sound.
Rio Claro Koskeros not to be outdone, riding high on the event as hosts and on their win as the S&C Zone 2001 SP Champions, played a remarkably tight and memorably bright set.
WITCO Desperadoes had not come all this way for nothing. In tipical Despers fashon they setteled in to entertain the Rio Claro croud and visitors, which was now in the region of over 1000 attendies, to just under an hours worth of exquisit pan music of all flavors.
To end this very successful event, World Steelband Festival Champs 2000, TCL Group Skiffle Bunch took the croud to the midnight mark with a very energetic, entertaining and bouncy finalle.

Bar-B-Que's, food stalls and bars for refreshments were available on site.

About the performers:
England’s Oxford University Magdalen College Choir ( pronounced Maud-lin’ ) is made up of 28 boy choristers and young adults, aged nine to 21 years. They have performed with distinguished acclaim to audiences in the USA, France, Hungary, Australia and Japan.
Hailed across the globe for providing music of outstanding beauty, the Choir has appeared in the award-winning film Shadowlands, starring Hollywood actors Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger; and 20th Century Fox's Ever After, starring Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Huston.

The Trinidad Lydian Singers are renowned for their vibrant performances and wide popular appeal. In March 2001, the Lydian Steel Ensemble opened the Tropical Baroque Music Festival in Florida. The audience appreciation was so overwhelming, that the hosts took the unprecedented step of immediately inviting the orchestra to open next year's festival 2002.

Trinidad’s TCL Group Skiffle Bunch captured the accolade of ‘Best Playing Steelband in the World’ when they won at the finals, held in Trinidad, of the World Steelband Music Festival in October 2000.

Tickets for concerts on 29th and 30th August available from Republic Bank's Ellerslie Plaza, Trincity Mall and Gulf City Mall branches and Signature 2000. Price TT$50.
