  Fri - 7th Aug 08:00 pm Pastiche Steel In Concert @ The Regency Ballroom
Pastiche Steel Ensemble, a premier steelband out of Chicago, USA, will show melodic pan at the cutting edge.

Pastiche TT ICP 2015 visitor members (as there are others scattered elsewhere around the globe), an effervescent and warm team: Mia Gormandy (Trinidad and Tobago), Yuki Nakano (Japan), Scott McConnell (Canada/USA), David Aarons (Jamaica), Abe Breiling (USA), Yuko Asada (Japan/USA) and Matt Filosa (USA).

The group will also launch the Virtual Steelband Project; an internet idea of some if its members, that seeped around the world, to inspire pan players from as far afield as Argentina, and beyond. A project showcasing panists from around the world performing together virtually as part of the ICP.
Playing Liam Teague's original composition, Bella Vista; connected web musicians uploaded their recordings to be processed and combined by sound and video engineers into a collage of videos, which have ultimately become the Virtual Steelband. Enjoy.

TT $200.00 general admission; Conference Attendees TT $175.00.

ADJUDICATION:
There shall be a total of Eight (8) judges for the International Steelband competitions.
Four (4) local from TT; Four (4) from foreign countries (1CB St Vincent, 2NA USA, 1EU UK).
Only Seven (7) judges shall actually deliberate at the competition;
The Seven (7) judges to be seated shall be selected by ballot immediately prior to the start of each stage of the competition.
The Eighth judge shall be appointed to serve as an alternate and shall take the place of any of the seven seated judges who may be unable to function for the entire stage of the competition for which they have been selected as a judge;
In tallying the points earned by the Steelbands during the competition, the highest and lowest points awarded by the judges to a steelband shall be excluded and the score to be awarded shall be the aggregate points of the other five (5) judges.
[Thus allowing a possible total of 500 points for a perfect performance.]
The decision of the judges shall be final and binding and the International Panorama Management Committee shall not entertain any protest with regard to judging.

Timeline of a World Panorama - TT ICP 2015
  The actual staging of the International World Panorama proceeds similarly to any local TT Panorama event. The steelbands, variously arrayed and practicing around the QPS, knowing their Order of Appearance (PO); will, at the appropriate time, proceed down the 'barbergreen' to queue in at the 'holding box', before being called to mount the stage. As the previous steelband has cleared the stage, the DJ will announce and 'play' the 'Tune of Choice' of the steelband; and the band will, on the red flag (or light), be called to set-up on stage. When the judges are ready, on the amber flag (or light), they will get the go ahead to play; and when they have finished, on the green flag (or light), move off and dismount the stage. All normal Panorama.
  With a 03:00 pm start, the show anticipates a normal 22 minute 'slot time' per band. These are medium sized steelbands (60 members), a little smaller than usual, so the run-around timings should hold. A simplistic estimate for 24 steelbands places a run time = 528 minutes. This resolves to 8 hrs 48 minutes ~= 8¾ hrs. This times in at 11:45 pm. Add some pomp and fracas at the beginning of the show, and we get to the end of showtime around midnight 15 to 30. Add 30 mins for compilation of results, naming the prize papers and readying the presenters; we get results at around 01:00 am. Normal Panorama.
  Well, if it does not go according to plan, dear we say "This is Trinidad!"

    Invaders Steel Orchestra - The History of a legendary Trinidad Steelband.
    by Jeannine Remy & Ray Funk

    invaders-book-cover_2015_courtasy pan-jumbie.com.jpg
    Book cover - Invaders Steel Orchestra - 2015 - courtasy pan-jumbie.com

    Some 25 years in the making, ideas for compiling a history of Invaders began as a seed of necessity and as a wanting long challenge to a young foreign female pannist whom, as a visiting music student from the US, first played tenor with Invaders for TT Panorama 1989. In her long walk through the corridors of music academia, following her newly found hobby, mainly focused on that unusual TT cultural heritage of percussive and musical 'pan', Jeannine Remy learnt part of her calling through direct tutelage from both Ellie and Vernon Mannette, the much revered and celebrated panmakers for Invaders. She would rise through the ranks to eventually take Invaders to the finals of the TT local and World Music Festivals, as arranger and conductor, on many occasions.

    Now resident in Trinidad, and as Lecturer of Music at the University of The West Indies, St. Augustine campus; Dr. Remy has shared her collected research archive of Invaders, much supplied by past and present members of the band, with the indomitable TT cultural historian Ray Funk. Through their collaborative efforts, this long awaited, compelling and excitingly illustrated 75 year history of one of Trinidad's oldest surviving steelbands, from Oval Boys to Invaders, will now be on the table to enlighten us.

    The book will officially be launched starting at 10:30 am, on Friday, 18th September 2015, from The President's Box, Queen's Park Oval; just across the road from the Invaders Pan Theatre. The book launch marks the start of a weeks worth of celebratory activities, some of which continue at The Oval, marking Invaders 75th Anniversary.

    SKIFFLE REPUBLIC DAY - HELP A HERO BENIFI CONCERT SEPTEMBER 2015

      Thu - 24th Sep 06 pm Skiffle Republic Day - Help a Hero Benefit Concert

    Coordinated mainly by Aquil Arrindell, Captain & arranger for San City Steel Symphony, after much planning and persuading with other pan colleagues; the Help a Hero Benefit Concert will come to fruition in the evening at the Skiffle Pan Theatre, San Fernando, on Republic Day 2015. The 'Benefit' is to raise funds from supporters for the care and medicines in the aid of ailing soldier-of-pan from the southlands, Lennox 'Sam' Fortune.

    Widely know in the South as a pan maker/tuner, pan teacher, driller and arranger; ex Captain of Hatters; 'Sam' a diabetic, is recognised for his insistence to carry on regardless. Often seen hobbling about with his walking-stick 'Sam' persists, despite predictions by his doctors that he would never walk again following a misguided 'playful' accident in mid 1973, when he was dropped oh his head and nearly broke his neck. After half a year on his back in hospital, 'Sam' decided that he had had enough of 'that', and intended to get out of 'there', and move on; which he did after another 2 months, though with limited mobility of his legs. A recent accident in 2015 had him bedridden again, much to his annoyance, when he fell and broke his hip.

    The aim of the 'Benefit', from the perspective of 'Sam's' past inspired student Aquil, who is now a UWI tutored musicisn and arranger, a very close colleague, is to organise a convalescence that gets 'Sam' back on his feet, as soon as reasonably possible. The word that Aquil is putting out is to 'please, donate generously'.

    Lennox 'Sam' Fortune began as an occasional labourer with the San Fernando Borough Council in 1971; became a Watchman for them at Skinner Park in 1974, till his retirement in 2013. He worked an ad hoc apprenticeship in pan making under Bertrand Kelman between 1971 and 1973; a skill he would continue to pursue throughout his active career with the steelbands.

    He co-arranged Panorama, together with Ken 'Professor' Philmore, for Hatters in 1980; where he continued as principle arranger and driller from 1981 to 1983. He became a co-founder of Lee Chong Pan Glow Steel Orchestra in 1984. Between 1986 an 1988, under the name of the Southern Pan Academy, he would teach pan technique to the youth, at his home at Forest Avenue, Cocoyea, San Fernando.

    On the elevation of San Fernando from a Town to a City; the San Fernando Borough Council invited 'Sam' to establish a steelband to mark the occasion. Still operating out of the 'Borough Yard', Carib Street, today, San City Steel Symphony performed its first City Day on 18th November 1988. Between that time and 2005, 'Sam' would act as stage side arranger and principle pan tutor to a whole new generation of youth with San City.

    Between 2005 and 2009 'Sam' rejoined Hatters as Captain. He discovered The Gabrielites Steelband, comprising at the time under-14 students principally from St Gabriels Girls School, in temporary residence at the panyard, while their school was working to accommodate a steelband. 'Sam' arranged their 'Blue' Festival piece for Point Fortin Borough Day 2005, which was won by the steelband. In mid 2006 'Sam' initiated the Hatters first Steelpan & Music Literacy Workshop (SMLW)  that graduated some 30 youth, with pan technique and some music literacy, following a 4 week programme. Hatters would continue the tradition completing its 6th SMLW in 2014. 'Sam' composed and arranged Pan Romance for Hatters Panorama 2009.

    Continuing in the pan making arena; 'Sam' Fortune acted as principal tutor for Pan Trinbago's Pan Making & Pan Tuning course held at the Pan Theatres of Hatters in 2005, and at Kalamo Kings in 2007. He would act as the Internal Verifier for Pan Making techniques on a Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme (YTEPP)  held at the Pan Theatres of Pan Elders in San Fernando in 2011 and at Arima Angel Harps, Arima in 2012.

    During all this time, 'Sam' would continually return to San City to assist with their summer Pan Camps and to drill their band for Panorama, up to the time of his accident in 2015.

    Lennox 'Sam' Fortune, a true 'son of the soil', as Gideon Maxime would no doubt say about our Southern Pan Jumbie. The call is now out to assist our man 'Sam'. Be a generous as you can, and may Your Gods be With You in thanks for whatever you may be able to contribute to get 'Sam' back on his feet, to continue in his extraordinarily dedicated life's work.
