NOTES - Pan in the 21st Century
RESULTS - Calypso for Pan Finals
CALYPSONIANS & SONGSCFP RESULTS
The Pan in the 21st Century concert gave Pan Trinbago a serious headache. Wishing to fill the gap in a weekend before the conventional steelband semi-finals, they had selected Down Memory Lane to showcase some Single Pan Bands. But the logistics and ill-preparedness of the bands defeated this idea.
Even the beginning of the Panorama proceedings for the 1999 season at Skinners Park, in San Fernando, failed to produce any of the selected steelbands to accompany the Calypso for Pan event. Phase II, Desperadoes, Laventille Serenaders, Tropical Angel Harps, Renegades and Fonclaire failed to appear. Most bands had no second tune to play, as arrangers attentions were on the Panorama presentations themselves. This would also mean that they would need to learn a third tune for this current event.
This went a long way to prove that Panorama is the main driving force behind the T&T steelbands, and only those bands with organised leadership, and generally supportive sponsorship, make it through the year to play other music, shows and festivals.
For this event at the Expo site; the first 12 of the conventional semi-finalists were chosen to perform; but many bowed out, again due to logistics and cited the 'Panorama excuse' of working towards tidying up their Panorama tune.
In the event, seven bands did take part, some before and some after the Pan Kaiso show.
- Arima Angel Harps with an interesting Kachita
- Exodus with the Titanic song My Heart Goes On
- Carib Tokyo with a just bearable I Believe I Can Fly, but played beautifully.
- Nu Tones with the sickening Al De La
- Solo Pan Knights with another sickening Unchained Melody (Who wants to hear this rubbish?)
- Fonclaire with a credible Now That We Found Love
All this helping to prove yet another T&T anomaly, in that the steelbands in general are set in a 20 to 30 year backward time warp. This can be supported by the fact that the general radio stations present very little in terms of external contemporary music, apart from things out of the American Top Pop charts, which is an exceedingly far cry from presenting a balanced spread of contemporary Western music; although curiously, the Asian radio stations fare much better at this in their own genre.
Another contributing factor may be represent by the general economic depravity in which the bands function, in that they are hard pushed to purchase a music system, far less being able to afford and knowing which of the music itself to purchase, in order to broaden their musical horizons. It would probably all get stolen anyway. Would this methodology undermine the unique cultural flavour that is the steelbands mainstay for their Panorama presentations? But all of this is yet another issue for future debate.tojo 06/02/99

Finals for 1999
Event - 5th February 1999 - EXPO Site, TRINCITY, Trinidad
Posted - 6th February 1999For the Pan Kaiso event as it was dubbed, guest appearances were made by arranger Earl Brooks who sang Who is Me, from his recent CD by the same name, and then went on to accompany his own song In D Band sung by Designer.
Also guesting to accompany either Eunice Peters'es or Nisha Crawford's song [will fix this later] was Mia Gormandy of Trinidad All Stars, who had appeared last year as a finalist in the Soloists category of the Pan Is Beautiful IX competitions.
Many calypsonians were accompanied by top flight pan musicians throughout these series of events.
