LENNOX Bobby MOHAMMED
Pan Player, ArrangerLennox Mohammed, affectionately called Bobby, has been a musical pillar of the South for many years.
Bobby had his early baptism into the world of steelband music from his early years while attending school at Presentation College, San Fernando.
He was encouraged, guided and motivated by his father Mr Hilton Mohammed, and to a lesser extent his brother Selwyn.
A few years later Bobby helped found the Gondoliers with which he stayed for a while.
When his band divided into two, Bobby formed the band the Cavaliers, whose anniversary date was February 25, 1961. The initial membership was 18 and Bobby led the band.
Around this time, Guinness Caribbean Limited, had decided to sponsor a steelband and so a competition between Gondoliers and Cavaliers was arranged in Woodford Square, Port of Spain. The winner was promised full sponsorship, and each band played 12 songs. Cavaliers won the contest and sponsorship was imminent.
After three years the band Cavaliers won the 1964 Southern Steelband Competition, the first of many successes which were to occur at a later stage.
Bobby was one of the selected top pannist who attended the MRA Conference in the USA in 1964 as a member of the National Steelband.
In 1965 he was again a member of a team of pannists who attended the Commonwealth Art Festival in London, not only as an arranger but as a member of the Management Committee. He also attended Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada as a top pannist.
Bobby, as leader of Guinness Cavaliers, had the distinction of leading this band to its first Panorama success in 1965, the first also for any band for the South in this competition which started in 1963.
