Frangipani (Plumeria)

  A deciduous plant, related to dog-bane, the Apocynaceae or Periwinkle family, which includes several other Frangipani species and numerous varieties; including the large Ditta Bark tree (Alstonia scholaris), Allamanda (Allamanda cathartica) and Oleander (Nerium oleander). A sweet scented flower, out of which perfume can be made. A native of the Tropical Americas; where some sources suggest a Caribbean origin.
  Commonly white flowers with tinges of yellow at the centre, to deep yellow, running to orange, through pink, to the less common fully red.
  The scent is distinctive, but deceptive to insect pollinators; whence attracted find no nectar for their pains.
  The huge ~5 inch (13 cm) read headed, yellow striped, black caterpillar with a tail, Pseudosphinx tetrio, feeds only on the leaves of variety Plumeria rubra; that morphs into an equally large greyish-brown deceptively camouflaged moth.
  The white milk of a cut stem is tacky, and is considered poisonous to humans and some animals if ingested; but has some medicinal properties at low concentrations; and for external use.
